The Northumberland Humane Society (NHS) was established in 1966 and since then has been serving the people and pets of Northumberland County. In the 50 years since NHS was established the organization as grown well always holding the community at its heart. The NHS is the only registered charitable animal shelter in Northumberland County and with this comes a lot of weight. Despite the amount of work the NHS as always risen to the challenge.

he NHS’s community involvement can be exemplified in many ways. One example is their Pet Aid program that helps low income individuals afford to spay or neuter their animals. This program both helps those who can not afford to pay for the survey themselves but it also helps limit the population a feral cats and dogs. Other small examples of their community involvement include their Pet Story Times with the local library that gives kids the opportunity to listen to a book while getting to see some of the adoptable animals at the NHS.

Furthermore their bottle drive fundraiser helped the community during the time when empties were not being collected. They were able to raise money and provide the county with a safe and easy way to return empties while facing a pandemic. Overall the NHS is a vital force in the community and works hard everyday to help every animal in the county regardless of size, breed, or species.

I chose to support the Northumberland Humane Society (NHS) as they are a major part of the store. For over 15 years Justin’s Pet Store has provided them with cat litter along with yearly fundraisers including our annual “Luck of the Paw” event and our annual “Pet Palooza” event. When Nutram announced they were doing this event it was an instant choice for me to continue to support the NHS through this amazing initiative. Through this event the NHS has now directly connected with Nutram which further shows that the decision to choose them as the charity I support was the right one.
