A Guide to Training Your Cat

From reinforcing good behaviour to litter box training and teaching fun tricks, we’ve got you covered.

From reinforcing good behaviour to litter box training and teaching fun tricks, we’ve got you covered. Training a cat may seem like a daunting task, but don't worry! With some feline behaviour know-how and a little bit of patience, it's entirely possible.

Deciphering the Feline Mystique

Before you begin, it's important to understand how cats think and what motivates them. Cats are independent creatures with unique personalities and natural instincts like hunting and grooming. Paying attention to their body language, from the flick of a tail to the intensity of a purr, can offer insightful clues into their emotions and preferences.

The Power of Paws-itive Reinforcement

When training your cat, start with the basics. Simple commands like 'sit' or 'stay' are a good place to start. Use positive reinforcement such as treats, praises, or petting to reward your cat for exhibiting the desired behaviour. Positive reinforcement using treats is effective in cat training. Just be sure to choose healthy treats, aligned with your cat's nutritional needs. Nutram kibble is great to use as treats during training sessions.

Consistency is key in cat training, so ensure you are using the same command and reward system each time. Unlike dogs, cats may take a little longer to respond to training, but with time, they will catch on.

Tackling Tabby Troubles

Cats can sometimes exhibit behaviours that are problematic or destructive, such as scratching furniture or refusing to use the litter box. Addressing these issues may require a bit more patience and creativity. For example, if your cat is scratching furniture, provide an enticing alternative like a scratching post. If your cat is having litter box issues, consider the location and type of litter box.

Litter box training is an essential part of cat training. To tackle litter box training with ease, start by choosing the right litter box based on your cat’s preference. Whether it's an open tray or a covered box for added privacy, experiment with different types and sizes to find the one your cat prefers. Place the litter box in a quiet and easily accessible area of your home, away from loud appliances or high-traffic areas.  Cats are clean creatures, and a dirty litter box can discourage them from using it. Scoop the litter box daily and replace the litter at least once a week.

If you have multiple cats, provide each cat with their own litter box to reduce the chances of territorial conflicts. Remember, patience is key during litter box training. If your cat has accidents outside the litter box, avoid punishing them.

Fun Tricks to Bring out the Playful Side

Teaching your cat tricks strengthens your bond and provides mental stimulation. Cats have individual personalities, and some may be more receptive to learning tricks than others. Adapt training to your cat's personality and keep sessions short and enjoyable. Here are three simple tricks you can try:

  1. High five: Hold a treat above your cat's head, rewarding them for reaching up with their paw.
  2. Spin around: Move a treat in a circular motion to encourage your cat to turn.
  3. Jump through a hoop: Use a hoop and treat to motivate your cat to jump.

Keeping Up the Purr-fect Behaviour

Cat training doesn't have to be an uphill battle. By understanding your feline's behaviour, practicing patience, consistency, and offering positive reinforcement (and plenty of love and affection), you'll find yourself successfully guiding your kitty towards better behaviour in no time. Every cat is unique, so it's important to adapt your approach according to your pet's personality and preferences. And most importantly, have fun with it!
