How To Spoil Your Pet On #LoveYourPetDay
If you love to dote on your cat or dog - and really, who doesn’t? - then #LoveYourPetDay is the holiday for you.
Like Mother’s Day or Father’s Day, February 20th is a chance to shower your pets with love, fun and a few treats. If you’ve never celebrated before, we’ve rounded up a few fun ways to do something extra-special for your cat or dog - read on, and don’t forget to give us your ideas in the comments!
New Digs
Your cat or dog probably has a favourite spot to relax, whether it’s the end of your bed, perched on top of a cabinet, or curled up in a box you were really hoping to throw away. Upgrade by giving them a space of their own - there’s never been more options on the market. We love the new World of Angus dog bed, which has a cooling gel top and memory foam base. While any cushion or pillow will technically work, choosing a dog bed that supports your dog’s joints and is hypoallergenic is a great investment in their health.
Cat beds are a little more versatile, but if your cat loves to squeeze into small spaces, may we suggest this radiator-heated option? Cuddly for them and design-minded for you - that’s a win/win.
DIY Treats
Store-bought treats are great - chances are you already know your pet’s favourite - but why not try a new DIY recipe? DIY treats are way easier than you think, and you’ll feel great knowing exactly know exactly which ingredients are in them. Dog Treat Kitchen has tons of creative ideas, but we love this simple recipe for dehydrated sweet potato husks. Simply cut your sweet potato lengthwise, about ? of an inch thick, and bake for about three hours at 250 degrees. This will dehydrate the potato, instead of baking it into mush. Your dog will love the sweet taste and chewy texture, and you’ll be giving them a boost of fibre and vitamin C. The treats will keep for about two weeks in the fridge.
If you’re making cat treats, Joy the Baker has an amazing recipe of the chewy variety you’ll want to take for a spin. This version is a bit more labour intensive, but the cooking time is shorter and it makes a huge batch.
Give Them A Grooming
Okay, this one might not work for every pet, but if your dog or cat is okay with grooming, take this opportunity to really go to town with a bristle brush. They’ll love the belly scratches, and you’ll be nipping a week’s worth of shedding in the bud. If you have a dog, you can go even further with a full top-to-toe pampering session - check out these at-home grooming tips to get started.
Stretch Your Legs
If you’ve been skipping out on getting outside since the temperatures dropped, take this opportunity to bundle up and let your pup loose in the snow. Chances are they’re getting just as stir-crazy as you by this point, so beat the cabin fever by bringing them outside for an extra-long walk along their favourite route, or somewhere totally new for them to explore. It’s a great excuse to get them out of the house, and you’ll thank them later for the extra exercise.
Have a cat? Unless you’re the type to leash them up and go for a walk, you’ll need to consider how to create playtime inside. Whether that’s letting them go crazy in a pile of catnip, buying a few feather toys for them to chase around the house, or breaking out the laser pointer, make a point of fitting in some playtime with your cat this #LoveYourPetDay.
