Ingredient Spotlight: Chamomile

We’re taking a closer look at the ingredients that help to give our Optimum Combinations their kick, or in this case, their calm. This time around, chamomile is in the spotlight and it already has a strong reputation in being a soothing herbal remedy.

Plants, specifically herbs, have had a hand in human health for thousands of years. If you have trouble sleeping, you may already be familiar with chamomile. Many people out there enjoy unwinding with a cup of chamomile tea and it’s known for it’s calming effects - in fact, over 1 million cups of the tea are enjoyed around the world daily.

Chamomile is rich in flavonoids, which are a group of plant metabolites that work together to trigger cell pathways and help to induce antioxidant effects. Basically, the abundance of these in chamomile is what helps to give it that soothing effect!

When it comes to traditional uses for chamomile, it’s got a solid history behind it. It has long been used as an anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, a sleep aid, mild astringent, healing medicine and more. There is also evidence that it can be used externally to treat wounds, bruises, burns, skin irritations and so much more.

Although it is generally known as a relaxant, there have been various scientific studies throughout the years to look at chamomile effects on the nerves and stomach. This study took a look at the effects of various herbs on the gastrointestinal system and found that chamomile is effective in helping to lower acidity in the gastric track while also helping to boost the immune system.

Just like humans, pets can have anxiety too. You may notice that your pets’ anxiety may increase in certain situations or that they may seems skittish, which often results in an upset stomach when they get hyper-excited or nervous about something. This is why some of our formulas include ingredients such as chamomile, to help soothe and calm the stomach.

However it is incorporated, chamomile has got a long-standing history of being an herbal remedy that’s proven to help with certain health aspects. You’ll find in in two of our Optimum Combinations for dogs and many of the same healing effects the herb has on humans carry over to dogs as well!
