It’s that time of year again with all sorts of festive foods. So let’s talk about a staple at some festival feasts…TURKEY! Not only is turkey great for your health, it is also has many great benefits for your pet. Turkey holds a whole host of nutritional benefits for your pet, being packed full of nutritional value and vitamins that make it a great staple for your pet’s diet.
For those pets that have an allergy or sensitivity to chicken or beef-based animal proteins, turkey provides a great alternative. Turkey is a highly digestible protein source. The meat of the turkey is low in fat and high in protein. The meat is also great for building and maintaining muscle, which makes it an excellent protein alternative.
Turkey is also high in vitamin and minerals, such as vitamin B6, vitamin B12, vitamin A, zinc, and niacin, but what it is most known for is tryptophan. We all know tryptophan for its sleepy side effects after a bit too much turkey, but did you know that tryptophan has other great properties? Tryptophan has been suggested through scientific studies as an important role in improving the immune system. It does this through T-cells. Our immune system creates T-cells which are the cells in our bodies that help fight off diseases and ailments. T-cells need tryptophan to function, which makes turkey a great source to support your pet’s immune health.
Turkey is also a good source of the trace mineral selenium. Selenium is an important trace mineral for our bodies, used for the thyroid hormone metabolism, antioxidant defense systems, and our immune systems.
