The pomegranate is a vibrant fruit that originated between Iran and northern India, named after the medieval Latin meaning “apple seeded”. The fruit is between the size of a lemon and a grapefruit and is round with a thick, leathery rind. Known for its juicy seeds and red-purple colour, it is in season in the Northern Hemisphere from September to February and in the Southern Hemisphere from March to May. The deciduous shrub on which the pomegranate grows can live for hundreds of years and exhibits striking bright red flowers.

The pomegranate is not the easiest fruit to grab and eat, but it is worth a little bit of work to profit from its benefits! To open a pomegranate, start by scoring it with a knife and breaking the rind. Then, you will need to separate the seeds from the inedible white pulp. Try separating the seeds in a bowl of water so that the pulp floats and you are left with the edible seeds. Freezing the whole fruit before opening it may also make this process easier.

Despite its unique seeds being hidden behind a thick rind, pomegranates are now used around the world for various culinary purposes. Perhaps the most popular use is for pomegranate juice, which has been drank in Europe and the Middle East for many years and is now popular in the United States and Canada as well. Pomegranate seeds are also used as an ingredient in various countries for spices, syrups, sauces, as an ingredient in trail mix and in some traditional remedies.

The advantages of consuming pomegranates for humans are their rich source of dietary fiber (which is contained completely in the fruit’s edible seeds) as well as their antioxidant properties. Similarly, pomegranates are beneficial for your pet because they are rich in polyphenols and have rich antioxidant properties that will help support your cat or dog’s natural defence against free radical and oxidative stress. When incorporated into their diet, this fruit also helps to boost your pet’s immune system and provides a natural source of Vitamin C and Vitamin K.
