The annual Take Your Cat to Work Day takes place on Monday, June 17, 2019.  While this day can be exciting for yourself and your colleagues, you may be wondering if you should take part and if so, how to do so to ensure everyone is comfortable.  We will explore different components of the day to consider.

Recieving the OK From Fellow Employees

First thing’s first -  getting permission.  Before you walk into the office carrying your cat, be sure to ask your HR department if any restrictions prevent you from bringing pets into the workplace.  Further, be sure to speak to your fellow employees.  Some people may be allergic to cats, or not feel comfortable with having a cat in the office.  While we all love your cat, unfortunately, not everyone shares our same passion for our feline friends.

Does Your Cat Really Want To Go?

Once you get the OK from everyone, it’s time to decide if this day suits you, as well as your cat.  Does your schedule allow flexibility of brining a pet to work?  Do you have any important meetings or off-site visits that may leave your cat’s care in others’ hands?  If you’ve answered “no” to both, it sounds like you’re prepared to have your best friend join you for the day!

Now, how about your cat?  Depending on your cat’s personality, they may not want to leave home to go somewhere new and unfamiliar.  Be sure that your cat is comfortable to be transported in a carrying case, and doesn’t mind a change to the normal environment they’re used to.  If your cat stresses easily, we would suggest reconsidering their office day experience.

Make Your Workplace Safe

Plan on making your workplace as safe and comfortable for your cat as you can.  Ensure that your workspace is isolated to the outdoors.  As adventurous as your kitty may be, we don’t want to see him escaping outside to an area they are unfamiliar with.  Further, check for potential hazards in the workplace.  Are there loose electrical cords, or access to chemicals?  If so, be sure to tidy up in advance to protect your cats’ wellbeing.

Make their experience comfortable.  Bring some things from home that they are familiar with.  This can include items such as small toys, their favorite pillow or bed to lie on, their food and water bowl, a litter box, and maybe some of their favorite treats. 

Cat Interactions with Other People

While your cat is in the office, don’t force them to interact with your colleagues.  People who are interested in your cat will likely make themselves known, and ask to play or pet your cat.  However if your cat wants to walk away or avoid someone, it’s best to let them wander at their leisure than force them to interact with someone they’re uncomfortable with.  If it’s possible, keep your office door closed to give your cat some space.  This can help with their stress and anxiety levels as well. 

Have a Backup Plan 

Be sure to have a plan of action just in case something goes wrong.  In the middle of the day, your cat may decide it’s not comfortable with being in the office after all.  Or perhaps someone may not be comfortable with having a cat at the office and may request for them to leave.  Be sure that you have pre-made arrangements to be able to drive your cat home if necessary, or have someone else available to pick them up and take them home for the remainder of the day. 

Alternatives for Take Your Cat to Work Day

Unfortunately, as cats aren’t quite as versatile as some dogs, many cat owners aren’t able to take their pets into the office.  Perhaps your employer doesn’t allow this, or your cat is unable to make the trip.  There are other ways to mimic them being there.

A common and easy way is a picture of your cat.  A picture is great alternative to have people see your cat without it physically being there.  Alternatively, perhaps your employer allows you to work from home periodically.  There are many benefits to working around pets, including stress relief for you, and relief from separation anxiety for your pet.

As fun as this day may be, it’s best not to force your cat to join in on the fun.  The more planning and preparation you are able to do beforehand, makes the experience more enjoyable for all!
