Vote for Humane Kind: #2 Critter Care Wildlife Society
Get to know Critter Care Wildlife Society from Langley, BC and how they're helping animal welfare ♥️
Vote for Humane Kind Update
In May 2020, Nutram recognized the increasing need for pet shelter funding during the global pandemic. Through our Vote for Humane Kind campaign, we invited you and your community to nominate charitable animal organizations. The top 10 organizations voted by communities across Canada each received $5,000 for everyday care necessities, including vaccinations, spaying or neutering, food and nutritional requirements, and more. Six months later, the recipients have shared with us how you were able to help them reach their goals to support animal welfare.
#2 Critter Care Wildlife Society
Critter Care Wildlife Society is a non-profit charity who rehabilitate injured and orphaned native wild mammal species, from deer mice to black bear cubs and everything in-between! We have been operating since 1984 and have steadily grown year after year with the number of animals we admit. We are the only wild mammal rehab center in southern B.C, this year we will have admitted over 2000 animals. We offer our surrounding communities a place of refuge to bring all injured and orphaned mammals, we rescue/ rehabilitate and release.
Critter Care is not government funded and we solely operate off the generosity of the general public and our monthly donors. We have an internship program where people travel from around the world to get hands on experience year-round. We can house up to 28 interns at any given time, we provide free room and board, our program is totally free! Many other wildlife sanctuaries like ours will charge thousands of dollars for the same program for only a few weeks. During an intern stay they will live on site as they typically raise the animals from a few weeks old and require feeding around the clock. Since Critter Care has become a much needed public service to the community, we slowly developed an education program for youth to teach them the fundamentals of our wild native mammal species and how we are able to coexist with wildlife. Children love this program as they get to see a wild animal up close and learn basics skills not taught in schools.
We are so grateful for everyone who voted for us, $5,000 was truly needed this year! Thank you Nutram for really showing your community spirit and giving back to so many worthy causes, bless you!
With the $5,000 we won we were able to secure the down payment to start construction on the new home of our “Small Animal Nursery”- The previous building was just over 580 SQFT, which we outgrew many years ago. With the new addition to the existing building we will have just over 1,200 SQFT! A significant improvement with some space to continue to grow. The total cost of this project was quoted around $55,000. We are unbelievably grateful to be able start this much needed project. If the animals could speak, they would be thanking you too.
