Vote for Humane Kind: #8 Second Chance Animal Rescue Society
Get to know Second Chance Animal Rescue Society from Edmonton and Athabasca, AB, and how they're helping animal welfare ♥️
Vote for Humane Kind Update
In May 2020, Nutram recognized the increasing need for pet shelter funding during the global pandemic. Through our Vote for Humane Kind campaign, we invited you and your community to nominate charitable animal organizations. The top 10 organizations voted by communities across Canada each received $5,000 for everyday care necessities, including vaccinations, spaying or neutering, food and nutritional requirements, and more. Six months later, the recipients have shared with us how you were able to help them reach their goals to support animal welfare.
#8 Second Chance Animal Rescue Society
Second Chance Animal rescue Society (SCARS) is an Edmonton and Athabasca, Alberta based registered charity that is almost entirely volunteer operated. We rely on money raised through donations, sponsorships, grants and other fundraising efforts.
SCARS exists because of pet overpopulation in Alberta. We rescue pets that are unwanted or slated for euthanasia. We intake them from community pounds, veterinary clinics, and situations where they have been abandoned. Many pets come to us sick or injured. Every animal receives veterinary care, rehabilitation, spay/neuter, vaccinations and a microchip. We operate two rural intake facilities plus a network of volunteer foster homes where adoptable pets live until they are adopted. Every year we find loving homes for more than 1,400 pets, and we also have sanctuary animals that will live out their lives in our care. We have helped more than 10,000 pets since 2002.
Reducing pet overpopulation in rural communities is an important part of what we do. We are proud for our Spay-Neuter-Return (SNR) program provides spaying/neutering, vaccinations, health checks and microchipping for owned pets, and our Walls 4 Winter program that provides those who participate in SNR with an insulated pet shelter.
SCARS currently we have over 350 animals in our current foster homes! That is double what we had in our care at this time last year. The Nutram donation is helping us cover the veterinary expenses for the hundreds of animals in our care. We are truly grateful for this much needed support.
