Ingredient Spotlight: Pumpkin
Pumpkin isn’t just for lattes and pies, it can also be a valuable ingredient in your cat or dog’s food!
We’ve crafted our Optimum Combinations with the health of your pet at the top of our minds. Each Nutram recipe features two of our Optimum Combinations and is packed full of high-quality ingredients that will help your pet to lead a happy and healthy life. One of these ingredients that we include in some of our recipes for both dogs and cats may be a bit unexpected - it’s pumpkin!
Pumpkin is an ingredient that offers a variety of health benefits for pets. It’s something that’s very high in fibre, which means that it’s a great aid in digestion. There are around 3 grams of fibre in a one cup serving of pumpkin! Due to the high fibre content of pumpkin, it can help in a couple of different ways. Firstly, it helps to push food through the digestive system and is a great aid in the digestive process. Second of all, it helps to promote fullness which is a great aid in weight loss for your pet. Your pet feels more full and they’ll be less inclined to overeat because of that.
This increase in fibre is also beneficial for pets who have a tendency for diarrhea. This is something that can be a regular issue in both cats and dogs. If you’ve noticed that this is a common problem in your pet, you’ll want to look for a food that offers them a higher fibre content.
Pumpkin is also a great ingredient for adult cats in particular. This is due to the fact that in your cat’s later years, they tend to have more issues with constipation. Pumpkin can help to ease the affects since it’s great for the digestive health of your pet.
One thing that pumpkins are certainly rich in is vitamin C. One cup of pumpkin contains a minimum of 11mg of the vitamin. This means that it offers some support for the immune system and some antioxidant benefits to boot! Additionally, the fatty acids and antioxidants in pumpkin help to support urinary health while also proving helpful for overall healthy skin and fur.
As you can probably tell, pumpkins are good for far more than just carving up for Halloween and Thanksgiving treats! We’ve got 9 recipes that feature this powerful ingredient that has multiple benefits for your pet.
